EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
